WUW: New Year, Not New Me + a Giveaway!

What’s Up Wednesday is an easy and fun weekly blog hop that’s hosted by Jaime Morrow and Erin L. Funk. All you do is answer the four main questions, then visit the other participants’ blogs to see what they’re up to this week. Join us! Jooooiiiin uussss!

Last year, I finally jumped on the Garth Nix train. I … have absolutely no idea why I didn’t read Sabriel in high school. I remember seeing it on the shelves in the book store where I worked, and I devoured fantasy but … for some reason I never read it. And I’m partly kicking myself, but partly not because I’m so enjoying reading them now! I’m on the tome that is Lirael, and though it is long, it is lovely. I really loved Sabriel as a character, but I love Lirael even more, and can’t wait to see where this book is going. (I’m in the 200s out of 700ish pages.)

In my goals post, I set a goal to finish THROUGH CLOUDED EYES by the end of March. And I’m getting closer every day! In fact, I’ve written at least 100 words every day. Truth be told, it’s never been more than 300+ because I’m slogging through the middle, and also because I’ve been writing at night (for various reasons), but starting today I’m officially taking back nap time as my writing time. So hopefully I’ll pick up pace! My goal for the week is to get back to writing during nap time (on weekdays … I’m more flexible on weekends) and to continue writing at least 100 words every day.

Those 100 words a day man … I love it. Anyone can write 100 words in a day. That’s a paragraph. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. And usually, when I look up my word count to see if I’ve hit 100, I’m already past 200.

It’s been snowy, snowy, snowy here, though Monday it warmed up to the 50s and the snow has finally started to melt. Such is life here in Denver. Get real cold + dump a bunch of snow then warm up + melt it all away. Rinse and repeat.  I actually really like it because it cuts down on piles of dirty, yucky snow and it gives some variety and breaks up the monotony of winter. Plus, we continue to get 300+ days of sunshine here in the Mile High City. Have I mentioned before how much I love Denver? No? You’re lying. ;)

And last but not least, I’m hosting a giveaway! Last year I participated in the cover reveal for my CP Kate Scott’s book, THE EVOLUTION OF EMILY. Now, I’m going to give a copy away to one lucky reader! Kate is a fantastic writer who creates characters you will miss long after you finish the book. I’m so excited to spread the word about EoE!

To enter, simply comment on this post! Easy! I’ll run the contest for two weeks and close it at 11:59 PM on Tuesday 1/20/14. Good luck!

I write speculative fiction inspired by mythos from around the world, complex family dynamics, and my own experiences living with mental illness. After earning my BA in Linguistics from Brigham Young University in 2008, I received my MFA in Creative Writing from Converse College in 2012. I live in Denver, where my husband and I spend countless hours chasing our three young sons (and sometimes catching them!). I collect tarot decks, dye my hair mermaid colors, and procrastinate by decorating my home. My debut novel, Feathers Sharp as Knives, releases on May 2, 2023.

  1. Welcome aboard the Garth Nix train :D I love Lirael, too. I read that book in my teens and she just spoke to me, you know? I love her.

Good luck with the 100 a day and HAPPY NEW YEAR! :D

    1. That’s exactly how I feel. Even when I was stomach-flu type sick, 100 days wasn’t too intimidating. (500 words would be, though.) On those type of days, I usually don’t get much beyond that, but words is words! Thanks for commenting!

  2. THE EVOLUTION OF EMILY is such a fantastic book! (I have a copy, so don’t include me in your giveaway. :-)) Best of luck working through your story’s middle, and have a wonderful week, Kris!

  3. I’m sooooo jealous of your snow! It’s like there is a line that crosses right above Richmond, VA and everywhere north of us gets snow and we get it so rarely.

I’ve heard a lot about Garth Nix, and I am usually not a huge fantasy reader, but I’ve been wondering why not. I like nearly all the fantasy I’ve ever read. I need to read more, and I am going to add SABRIEL to my TBR list right now!

Your CP’s book looks interesting, too! Sign me up for ALL THE BOOKS! ;)

  4. I read Garth Nix’s KEYS TO THE KINGDOM series a few years ago and loved it. I’ve always meant to get back to some of his other books but, y’know…. so many books, so little time!

Oh, the dreaded middle of an MS. Ugh! Good luck in taking back nap time for writing. If you can find a set time to write, that is awesome. I need to do that!!

Good luck with your goals and have a great week! I responded to your e-mail, so you should’ve heard from me unless g-mail ate it. :)

  5. I didn’t read Sabriel until college, and I was also disappointed in myself for taking so long! Better late than never, I guess :)

Your description of snow in Denver reminded me of explaining to my grandma (who lives in Upstate New York) that no one in Seattle owns a snow shovel because the rain does it for us. (Which is nice, because I’m WAY TOO LAZY for that.)
