winter wuwWHAT I’M READING

I finished The Book Thief last week and FELT ALL THE FEELINGS!! So wonderful. So brilliant. If you haven’t yet read that book, fix that immediately! Now I’m re-reading Seraphina by Rachel Hartman and it is as beautiful the second time. Another book you need to read it you haven’t yet.

I’ve now revised 20 chapters, leaving 15 more. I’ve been hovering just below 60k the past few days since I’ve done a lot of cutting, but today I’ll add enough that I’ll finally hit that milestone. The first version of this story, SPARKS, was 57k when I finished the first draft. (I never revised, instead choosing to re-imagine and change the whole story–and that’s how FRACTURED RADIANCE was born.) So I’ve never written a book that was 60k and it feels really good. I’ve also hit that point where I want to do nothing but work on my book. I love that feeling!

Kpop! I’ve been listening to it constantly and I love it. But I’m not going to share any this week, because I want to keep this post short. Next week, promise!

I’m hosting a giveaway of Kate Scott’s new book Counting to D! I actually started it last week and it was supposed to end last night at midnight but for some reason hardly anyone entered. I’m guessing I didn’t do a good job of promoting it. I’ve extended it for another week. So go enter!

How is your week? Wait, don’t answer that. JUST ENTER THE GIVEAWAY!! ;)

I write speculative fiction inspired by mythos from around the world, complex family dynamics, and my own experiences living with mental illness. After earning my BA in Linguistics from Brigham Young University in 2008, I received my MFA in Creative Writing from Converse College in 2012. I live in Denver, where my husband and I spend countless hours chasing our three young sons (and sometimes catching them!). I collect tarot decks, dye my hair mermaid colors, and procrastinate by decorating my home. My debut novel, Feathers Sharp as Knives, releases on May 2, 2023.

  1. My week was FABULOUS, thanks for not asking. And also thanks for promoting my book.

As for all the rest of you guys, you should definitely go enter Kris’s giveaway. Not only is she giving away a copy of my book (awesome) but the virtual blog tour post associated with that giveaway is my favorite one of all the blog tour posts I wrote (and I wrote 22 of them).

  2. Ok….I distinctly remember entering and also distinctly remember there being no qualification as to whether the drawing had a minimum response, soooo…where’s my book? Hmmmm?

  3. I’d love to hear yoru Kpop suggestions; I have a WIP with a Korean-American MC; I put it aside for now working on something else, but I’ll be getting back to it in about a month.

I’ll check out Kate’s link.I have her book on my list already.

Congrats on 60k for your book! That word count goal is a great achievement. :)

  4. To say my daughter loves K-Pop is an understatement comparable to “it gets cold in Canada during the winter,” so I’m somewhat familiar with that world. I look forward to your post next week, to find out who you’ve been listening to. If you want any suggestions for further listening, I’m sure SecondBorn would love to help. :)

Sounds like you’re making fabulous progress on the book, Kris! And it’s really cool that all you want to do is work on it. May the words flow like a chocolate waterfall for you this week. :)

  5. I have found that the more time I spend in my story world, the more time I want to spend there. Sounds like you are on a roll if you are feeling like you want to work on it all the time. AWESOME!

  6. 60K – whoop whoop! :) Hurrah for that, Kris! I looove that you’re in the ‘happy to be writing’ place with your WiP. It makes me want to get back there. I’m in the ‘drag my feet’ and ‘pretend like I can write without actually writing’ phase of my revisions. Not good!

Ooh, speaking of your ms, have you heard of GILDED by Christina Farley? The MC is a Korean-American girl and it’s set in Seoul – which made me think of you. It’s a Kindle First Pick this month – which I *think* means you can get it for free if you have a Kindle. (link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/digital/kindle/botm/ref=sr_botm?qid=1392239168) Anyhow, I thought I’d mention it just in case!

I entered the giveaway (so we can still be friends, right?). :) Have a great week, Kris!

  7. I really enjoyed SERAPHINA too, but I was super bummed when I discovered that the sequel isn’t out until 2015. That feels like a horribly long wait for a book that has been out for as long as SERAPHINA has. I think I’ll have to re-read it once the sequel is getting closer to its release date.

That’s fantastic that you’re so excited about your story. I don’t think there are too many things better than that! :-)

  8. Okay, I have to admit that I had to go Google “kpop.” And now I’m intrigued! You are really cruising on revisions. You’re my hero! :) I shall stop web surfing right now and go work on my revisions! Have a great week, Kris.
